This week we have been hitting that number sense with all out might. Our afternoons have been filled with counting, comparing, ordering, and those all-mighty number words. To help get a little bit of everything in today, we played Number Word Knockout.
Here's how this one works (it's nothing new really . . . but it just has a little extra sparkle in a few places).
- Every student gets a pair of dice, three crayons of choice, and a marker.
- When play begins, students take turns rolling their dice. They count the dots, trace the number word in marker, and color the box (coloring was just to slow them down a bit and to engage them a bit more - they choose which colors to use each time).
- They continue in this fashion until their board is filled or time is called.
I thought this would take 5 minutes. They totally loved it though. The room got all quiet (this class does this at the most random times . . . it's fantastic) and they were having the best time with this simple task. It lasted upwards of 20 minutes . . . yup . . . you read that right . . . almost 20 minutes. I was floored with how meticulous they were being :)
Here's the kicker though . . . you know that marker I gave 'em?? Well, I let them all pick a smelly marker to use. This was the first time these made it out of the package this year and they FREAKED OUT! I drew numbered sticks and they got to come up and select a scented stick of goodness. Thank you Rose Art for the cheap smelly supply this year.
All in all, it was a great success. I know it's a rather old concept, but that smelly made all the difference. If you are interested, you can snag this "oldie, but a goodie" down below - just click the image to download.
Thank you Miss Tiina Fonts . . . oh, how I love you! |
Thanks Kelley! We did the ice cream patterns the other day and my kiddos loved it. I can't wait to have them do this now.
